Quick & Comprehensive Urgent Care Services in Carmel, IN

Urgent care fills a critical gap in the healthcare system: conditions that are too acute to wait for a scheduled primary care appointment but not serious enough to warrant an emergency room visit. At Monarch Medicine in Carmel, our illness treatment and injury care services cover that entire middle ground—with same-day physician evaluation, on-site diagnostics, and treatment that begins the day you walk in.

I’m Dr. Lisa Clay, MD, FAAFP, board-certified family physician and Medical Director at Monarch Medicine. Urgent care works best when patients understand what it can do and—just as importantly—when to bypass it for the ER. This guide covers both, so you can make the right call quickly when something comes up.

What Urgent Care Is—and What It Isn’t

Urgent care is designed for acute, non-life-threatening conditions that need same-day evaluation and treatment. It’s not a replacement for your primary care physician for ongoing chronic disease management, and it’s not an emergency room for conditions requiring surgical intervention or intensive monitoring.

What urgent care does well: rapid diagnosis using on-site testing and imaging, same-day prescriptions, wound closure, splinting, and treatment of the full range of common acute illnesses and injuries. At Monarch Medicine, we handle all of that with a board-certified physician at every visit—which is not the standard at most urgent care chains.

What to Expect During Your Visit

Walk in, check in at the front desk or check in online through MyChart before you arrive to get in the queue. You’ll be evaluated by Dr. Clay, who will take a complete history, perform a focused physical exam, and order any on-site testing needed to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment begins the same visit—prescriptions are sent electronically, procedures are done on-site, and you leave with written instructions and clear criteria for when to return or seek further care.

To streamline your visit, bring: a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications and dosages, and any known drug allergies. If you’re bringing a child, bring their immunization records if you have them.

Monarch Medicine is integrated with Epic and MyChart—the same electronic health record system most Carmel-area primary care providers use. Visit documentation, test results, and referrals are automatically available to your regular physician. You don’t have to relay what happened at your urgent care visit; we handle the handoff.

Urgent Care vs. the ER: A Practical Decision Guide

The most important decision when something goes wrong is where to go. Going to the ER for a strep throat means a 3–4 hour wait and a bill that’s 5–10x higher than urgent care. Going to urgent care for a heart attack costs you time you don’t have. Here’s how to think through it quickly:

Come to Monarch Medicine Go to the ER or Call 911
Fever, flu, strep, ear infection, sinus pain Chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing
UTI, rash, allergic reaction (without throat swelling) Signs of stroke: facial drooping, arm weakness, sudden speech difficulty
Sprains, suspected minor fractures, cuts needing stitches Severe allergic reaction with throat swelling or difficulty swallowing
Pink eye, dehydration, GI illness, back pain Loss of consciousness, seizures, major trauma
Sports physicals, camp physicals, vaccinations Heavy uncontrolled bleeding, compound fracture
Wound infection, minor burns, eye infections Suspected poisoning or overdose, severe head trauma

If you’re unsure which category your situation falls into, call us at (317) 804-4203. We’ll help you triage honestly— including telling you to go to the ER if that’s the right call.

Cost and Insurance at Monarch Medicine

We accept most major insurance plans. For patients without insurance or with high-deductible plans, our self-pay rate is approximately $150 for a new patient visit—significantly less than a comparable ER visit. Procedures such as X-rays, rapid testing, or IV fluids carry an additional charge, and we disclose costs before treatment begins. View our full self-pay pricing before your visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Urgent care treats acute, non-life-threatening conditions with same-day evaluation—typically at a fraction of ER cost and in significantly less time. The ER is equipped for life-threatening emergencies requiring surgical intervention, intensive monitoring, or specialist-level care. For the majority of common illnesses and injuries, urgent care is faster, less expensive, and equally effective. If you’re unsure which applies, call us at (317) 804-4203.

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of current medications and dosages, and any known drug allergies. If you’re being seen for a chronic condition flare-up, bring any relevant records or a list of prior diagnoses. For children, bring immunization records if you have them—particularly if you’re coming in for a physical that requires vaccination documentation.

Yes. We have digital X-ray with a dedicated radiology technologist and rapid testing for flu, strep, COVID-19, and RSV on-site. Results are available during your visit so treatment decisions are made the same day. We also perform urinalysis and can order send-out labs that integrate with your Epic/MyChart record.

We accept most major insurance plans—your cost depends on your coverage and copay structure. For self-pay patients, the base visit rate is approximately $150 for a new patient. Procedures such as X-rays, rapid testing, IV fluids, or wound closure carry an additional charge, and we disclose those costs before treatment. View our full self-pay pricing page for details.

Yes. Dr. Clay prescribes non-controlled medications as part of urgent care evaluation—antibiotics for bacterial infections, antivirals when indicated, prescription topical treatments, and more. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy. Monarch Medicine does not prescribe controlled substances (opioids, benzodiazepines) in the urgent care setting.

We accept most major insurance plans. Coverage and copay amounts vary by plan—most insurance plans cover urgent care at a lower copay than an ER visit. If you’re unsure whether your plan is accepted, contact us before your visit and we’ll verify. We’re always transparent about costs upfront so there are no billing surprises.
