Common Strep Throat Symptoms
- Severe sore throat that starts quickly
- Painful swallowing
- Fever, chills, headache
- Red, swollen tonsils (may have white patches)
- Tender, swollen neck lymph nodes
- Little to no cough (often a clue it’s strep, not a cold)
When to Get Tested
- Sore throat plus fever and no cough
- Exposure to someone with confirmed strep
- Symptoms not improving after 48–72 hours
- Children with significant throat pain or fever
If you have trouble breathing, drooling, severe dehydration, or a stiff neck, seek emergency care.
How the Rapid Strep Test Works
- Quick swab: We gently swab the back of your throat/tonsils.
- Rapid analysis: The test detects Group A Streptococcus antigens.
- Results: Typically available in about 10 minutes.
- Next steps: Positive tests are treated; negative tests may be observed or, if needed, followed by a lab culture per clinical judgment.

If Your Test Is Positive
- Antibiotics when appropriate (per MD evaluation)
- Fever control, fluids, rest, throat soothing measures
- Typically stay home until 24 hours after starting antibiotics & fever improves
If Your Test Is Negative
- Supportive care and watchful waiting
- We’ll discuss when to return or consider a culture
- We’ll also consider other causes (viral sore throat, allergy, reflux, etc.)
