Why We Built Monarch Medicine
Dr. Lisa Clay spent nearly two decades as a board-certified family physician — and spent most of that time watching the healthcare system move in the wrong direction. Visits got shorter. Providers rotated. Patients became numbers on a corporate dashboard. The system optimized for throughput, not for the person sitting on the exam table.
In May 2024, she and her husband Todd opened Monarch Medicine Urgent Care in Carmel with a simple premise: what if urgent care worked the way patients actually want it to? A physician who knows your name. Same-day X-rays without a referral. Published pricing before you walk in. A clinic that's open 7 days a week and treats every patient — newborns to seniors — with the time and attention they deserve.

Most urgent care clinics are owned by hospital systems or private equity firms. Monarch Medicine is owned by the physician who sees you.

Monarch Medicine is not part of IU Health, Ascension, Community Health, or any corporate chain. Dr. Clay owns the clinic, sets the standard of care, and answers to patients — not shareholders. Our only incentive is to take care of you.

At hospital-owned urgent cares, you see a different nurse practitioner or PA every time. At Monarch Medicine, every patient is evaluated by a physician — a board-certified MD or DO. That's a clinical decision we made on day one, and it hasn't changed.

We publish our self-pay pricing online — before you walk in. We accept most major insurance plans. We don't hide fees, upcode visits, or send mystery bills weeks later. You know what you're paying before you leave.

Your Records Travel With You
Monarch Medicine uses Epic — the same electronic medical record system used by IU Health, Community Health, and most major health systems in Indiana. Your visit records are accessible through MyChart, so your primary care physician, specialists, and any future providers can see exactly what was done during your visit.
This means no faxing records, no repeating your history, and no gaps in your care. When you walk into Monarch Medicine, you're not leaving the healthcare system — you're adding a physician-owned option to it.

Dr. Lisa Clay, MD, FAAFP
Founder & Medical Director · Board-Certified Family Physician
Dr. Clay is a board-certified family physician and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians with nearly two decades of clinical experience. She's treated thousands of patients across the full spectrum of family medicine — from newborn wellness checks to complex adult care, from sports injuries to chronic disease management.
She founded Monarch Medicine because she saw what corporate healthcare was doing to the patient experience: shorter visits, rotating providers, protocol-driven care that treated symptoms instead of people. Her goal was straightforward — build a clinic where patients get the same quality of care she'd want for her own family.
