WHAT WE IMAGE

Common X-Rays at Monarch

A Monarch physician examines you, decides what views are needed, and orders the X-ray. Our digital X-ray system produces images quickly so a physician can read them during your visit.

Chest & Spine

Cough with concern for pneumonia, rib pain after a fall or hit, persistent back pain, suspected pneumonia in children, abdominal X-ray for certain symptoms.

Upper Extremity

Hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder — for sports injuries, falls, suspected fractures, finger or wrist pain that won't resolve.

Lower Extremity

Foot, ankle, knee, hip, and tibia/fibula — for ankle sprains where fracture needs to be ruled out, knee injuries, hip pain after a fall, and similar.

If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, tell us before imaging. We discuss the safest path with you, and your OB's recommendation guides any timing decisions.

IMAGING WE DON'T DO

Where to Go for Other Imaging

Monarch performs digital X-ray only. For other imaging, we tell you where to go before you make the trip:

CT scan, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, mammography → These require dedicated imaging equipment Monarch does not have. The right place depends on what your physician orders. Common Indianapolis-area options include IU Health Imaging, RAYUS Radiology, and hospital-based imaging departments.

Imaging during an active emergency → Severe trauma, suspected stroke, severe head or neck injury, suspected hip or pelvis fracture after a serious fall, or any condition that needs CT or MRI urgently — go directly to the emergency room or call 911.

Imaging without a physician evaluation → We do not perform X-ray on a walk-in basis without an office visit. A Monarch physician must examine you and order the imaging before we image. This protects you from unnecessary radiation and from results that get read without context.

If you are not sure whether Monarch is the right place for what you need, call (317) 804-4203 first. We will help you sort it out before you make the trip.

FROM DR. CLAY

Reading Your X-Ray Before You Leave

When you fall on a wrist or hear something pop in an ankle, the question is simple: is it broken or not. Waiting two days for an answer means two days of guessing, two days of skipping work, two days a child cannot play.

A Monarch physician examines you, decides which views are needed, and reads your X-ray during your visit. If we see a fracture, we splint it, talk through next steps, and arrange orthopedic referral if indicated. If we don't see one, we tell you that too — with the honest caveat that some hairline fractures need a few days to show up on imaging.

We send your records and images to your primary care doctor and any specialist we refer you to. You leave with a plan, not a wait.

HOW YOUR VISIT WORKS

Your X-Ray Visit in 4 Steps

1

Walk In or Schedule

Walk in during open hours or book through MyChart. Bring a photo ID and insurance card if applicable.

2

Physician Exam & Order

A Monarch physician examines you, decides which X-ray views are needed, and writes the order. This is the office visit.

3

Imaging by an RT

A radiologic technologist takes the images using our digital X-ray system, with shielding as appropriate.

4

Read & Plan

A physician reads your X-ray during your visit and discusses results, splinting if needed, and any referrals before you leave.

A radiologist over-read may follow within 1–2 business days when indicated. If the radiologist's read changes the plan, we contact you. Records can often be shared with your primary care doctor through MyChart and Care Everywhere.

FOR PARENTS

Pediatric X-Ray for Kids of All Ages

When a child falls off a bike or rolls an ankle in soccer, parents often call us first because many urgent cares refer kids out. We don't. Monarch images children of all ages right here.

A Monarch physician examines your child first to decide whether an X-ray is the right next step. If it is, our radiologic technologist uses the smallest beam and shortest exposure that produces a useful image, with lead shielding as appropriate. We let parents stay in the room when it is safe to do so.

If the X-ray shows a fracture, we splint, give honest guidance about activity, and arrange orthopedic referral if indicated. If it does not, we tell you what to watch for over the next few days and when to come back.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Walk-In X-Ray FAQ

Do I need an appointment for an X-ray?

No. Walk in any time during open hours: Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 12pm. Booking online through MyChart is also available if you prefer to hold a time slot.

Can I just get an X-ray without an office visit?

No. An office visit is required for every X-ray. A Monarch physician examines you, decides which views are needed, and orders the imaging. We don't image without a Monarch physician's order — this protects you from unnecessary radiation and from results that get read without context.

How quickly will I get results?

A Monarch physician reads your X-ray during your visit. You leave with a plan, not a wait. A radiologist over-read may follow within 1–2 business days when indicated. If the radiologist's read changes the plan, we contact you.

Can my child get an X-ray here?

Yes. We image children of all ages. Many urgent cares refer pediatric X-ray out; we don't. Our radiologic technologist uses pediatric-sized protocols, lead shielding as appropriate, and the shortest exposure that produces a useful image. Parents can stay in the room when it is safe to do so.

Will I see a doctor?

Yes. A Monarch physician examines you, orders the X-ray, reads the images during your visit, and discusses next steps with you before you leave. The X-ray itself is taken by a radiologic technologist.

How much does an X-ray cost if I self-pay?

A Monarch X-ray visit has two fees: the office visit ($153.30 new patient, $105.70 established patient) and the X-ray itself ($157.50 per study, radiologist read included). For example, a single wrist X-ray for a new patient totals $310.80 self-pay. Multiple X-ray studies are billed per study. We review your expected total before imaging.

Can you send my images or results to my primary care doctor?

Yes. Records can often be shared with your primary care doctor through MyChart and Epic Care Everywhere. We also send records and images to any specialist we refer you to. Tell us at check-in who you would like the records sent to.

What if I'm pregnant?

Tell us before imaging. We discuss the safest path with you. Pregnant patients should follow their OB's recommendation for any imaging timing decisions. Some imaging can wait; some cannot. A Monarch physician will not order an X-ray during pregnancy unless the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.

What about CT, MRI, or ultrasound?

We do not perform CT, MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, or mammography. These require dedicated imaging equipment Monarch does not have. The right place depends on what your physician orders — common Indianapolis-area options include IU Health Imaging, RAYUS Radiology, and hospital-based imaging departments.

Will the X-ray catch every fracture?

Most fractures are visible on X-ray. Some hairline fractures and stress fractures don't show up on initial imaging and need a few days to become visible. If we do not see a fracture but you are still in significant pain after several days, come back — we may repeat imaging or refer to orthopedics.

Do you accept insurance?

We are in network with Anthem BCBS, United Healthcare, Aetna, Cigna, and Encore/IU Health Plans. We are NOT in network with Medicaid or Humana. Coverage may apply for medically necessary imaging, depending on your plan, deductible, and benefits. HSA and FSA accepted. Self-pay rates are listed above.
