SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS
Sprain vs. Fracture — How to Tell the Difference
Sprains and fractures can cause similar pain, swelling, and bruising. A Monarch physician examines your injury and determines whether you need an X-ray or further evaluation.
Sprain (Ligament Injury)
- Involves stretched or torn ligaments
- May cause pain, swelling, and bruising
- May make the joint feel unstable
- A severe sprain can make bearing weight difficult
Treatment depends on severity and may include support, bracing, pain management, and rehabilitation.
Fracture (Broken Bone)
- Involves a crack or break in a bone
- Can cause symptoms similar to a sprain
- May require imaging to identify the injury
- Treatment depends on the fracture’s location and severity
Your physician determines the appropriate stabilization, treatment, and need for orthopedic referral.
Not sure what you injured? Walk in for a physician evaluation, with on-site digital X-ray when indicated.

PHYSICIAN-LED INJURY CARE
More Than Ice and Ibuprofen
A sprained ankle seems simple — until you find out it’s actually a fracture, or a “minor” knee twist turns out to be a ligament tear that needs orthopedic follow-up. At Monarch Medicine, Dr. Lisa Clay, MD performs a thorough musculoskeletal examination, orders X-rays when clinically indicated, and determines whether your injury can be managed here or needs specialist referral.
For injuries we treat on-site, Dr. Clay provides splinting, bracing, pain management, and a clear return-to-activity plan. For injuries requiring orthopedic care, she provides the initial stabilization, imaging, and a warm referral so you don’t start from scratch with the specialist.
"I see a lot of patients who ‘walked it off’ for a week before coming in. By then, the swelling has masked the real injury. Getting an X-ray and a proper evaluation early leads to better outcomes and faster recovery." — Dr. Lisa Clay, MD, Owner & Medical Director

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sprain & Sports Injury FAQ
Can urgent care X-ray my ankle?
Yes. We offer on-site digital X-rays when medically indicated. A Monarch physician examines your ankle and determines whether imaging is needed. If ordered, a radiologic technologist performs the X-ray, and the physician reviews the images and discusses next steps.
How do I know if my ankle is sprained or broken?
Sprains and fractures can both cause pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight. Get prompt medical evaluation if you cannot bear weight. A physician will examine the injury and decide whether X-rays or additional evaluation are needed. Go to the ER for a visibly deformed limb or new numbness after an injury. Call 911 for severe bleeding, bone through the skin, or a hand or foot below the injury that becomes pale, blue, or cold.
Do you treat knee injuries?
Yes. A Monarch physician evaluates knee injuries and may order an X-ray to look for a fracture. Some injuries need follow-up, additional imaging such as an MRI, or an orthopedic referral. Your physician will recommend the next step based on the examination.
Can you put a splint or brace on my injury?
Yes. We provide on-site splinting, bracing, and immobilization for sprains and fractures. A Monarch physician selects the appropriate stabilization method based on the injury type and location.
How much does a sprained ankle visit cost?
Your cost depends on the evaluation, any imaging or supplies needed, and your insurance coverage. Visit our self-pay pricing page for current self-pay rates, or call (317) 804-4203 with pricing questions.
My child was injured during a game. Can you see them?
Yes. We treat patients of all ages including children and adolescents. We also provide sports physicals to help prevent injuries before they happen.
Do you accept insurance for injury visits?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans including Anthem, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna. We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana. We also offer affordable self-pay pricing.

What Our Patients Say
★★★★★
"The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring when I brought my daughter in. They created a welcoming environment with coffee, water, and snacks in the waiting area, which was a thoughtful touch. I also really appreciated their clear in-office pricing. They bill insurance but also offer very reasonable cash-pay options, which provides peace of mind compared to the unpredictable costs of an ER visit. Most importantly, the experience felt personal rather than rushed. Highly recommend if you’re looking for compassionate, patient-centered care."
