Why MinuteClinic Referred You to Urgent Care — And What to Do Next

If you’re reading this, you probably just left a MinuteClinic visit frustrated. You waited, got checked in, and then the nurse practitioner told you they couldn’t help — and referred you somewhere else. That’s time and money you won’t get back.

I’m Dr. Lisa Clay, board-certified family physician and founder of Monarch Medicine Urgent Care in Carmel. I see patients every week who started at CVS MinuteClinic and ended up here after being told “this is outside our scope.” It’s not a failure on the NP’s part — they’re following the rules of a retail clinic model that’s designed for a narrow set of conditions. The problem is that patients don’t know those limits before they walk in.

Here’s why you were referred, and what to do next.

The 7 Most Common Reasons MinuteClinic Refers You Out

1. You Need an X-Ray

MinuteClinic has no imaging equipment. If you came in with a possible broken bone, a badly sprained ankle, a chest complaint, or any injury that requires an X-ray to diagnose, they can’t help. They’ll tell you to go to urgent care or the ER.

At Monarch Medicine: We have on-site digital X-ray with same-day results. We diagnose, splint, cast, and refer to orthopedics if needed — all in one visit.

2. You Need Stitches

MinuteClinic cannot perform laceration repair. If you have a cut that needs sutures, staples, or wound glue, they’ll clean it and send you elsewhere.

At Monarch Medicine: We perform laceration repair on-site — sutures, staples, wound glue, and wound care follow-up. Adults and children.

3. Your Child Is Too Young

MinuteClinic has age restrictions — typically 18 months and older. If your infant or young toddler is sick, they’ll turn you away.

At Monarch Medicine: We see children of all ages — newborns through teens. No age restrictions.

4. Your Condition Is Too Complex

MinuteClinic NPs follow standardized protocols for a limited list of conditions. If your symptoms don’t fit neatly into their decision tree — persistent abdominal pain, chest tightness, recurring infections, high fever with multiple symptoms — they’ll refer you out.

At Monarch Medicine: A physician (MD/DO) evaluates you based on clinical judgment, not a protocol checklist. We handle complex presentations, order appropriate labs, and make diagnosis-level decisions on the spot.

5. You Need Lab Work Beyond Rapid Tests

MinuteClinic can run rapid strep and flu tests, but comprehensive lab work — metabolic panels, STD panels, thyroid, A1C — gets sent to an outside lab with results days later.

At Monarch Medicine: We run comprehensive lab panels on-site with same-day results for most tests. No outside referral needed.

6. You Need a Procedure

Abscess drainage, foreign body removal, splinting, wound debridement — none of these are within MinuteClinic’s scope. If you need anything hands-on beyond a basic exam, you’ll be sent elsewhere.

At Monarch Medicine: We perform these procedures walk-in, same-day. No appointment, no referral.

7. They’re at Capacity or the NP Is Unavailable

MinuteClinic locations are staffed by a single NP. If they’re on lunch, off for the day, or the queue is full, you’re out of luck. There’s no backup provider.

At Monarch Medicine: We’re open Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat–Sun 9am–12pm. Walk in or check in online to hold your spot.

The Real Cost of Starting at MinuteClinic

When MinuteClinic refers you, you’ve already spent time (the wait, the check-in, the exam) and potentially money (a copay or self-pay fee for a visit that didn’t resolve anything). Now you have to start over somewhere else. That second visit has its own copay, its own wait, and its own clock — all while your injury or illness goes untreated.

If there’s any chance your condition involves imaging, a procedure, lab work beyond a rapid test, or a complex presentation, skip the retail clinic and come to urgent care first. You’ll save time, money, and frustration.

What to Do Right Now

If MinuteClinic just referred you and you need care today:

  1. Check in online from wherever you are — this puts you in our queue so your wait starts before you arrive.
  2. Bring your MinuteClinic paperwork if they gave you any notes. It helps us see what was already assessed.
  3. Bring your insurance card. We accept most major plans including Anthem, UHC, Aetna, and Cigna. We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana.
  4. Walk in. 90 Executive Drive, Suite A & B, Carmel, IN 46032 — less than 2 miles from the CVS on Range Line Road.

MinuteClinic Sent You Away. We Won’t.

Physician-led urgent care. On-site X-ray. Stitches. Lab work. All ages. No appointment needed.
