DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

Viral vs. Bacterial Sinusitis — Why It Matters

Most sinus infections are viral. Your symptom pattern, duration, and examination help a Monarch physician determine whether antibiotics are appropriate. Yellow or green mucus alone does not prove a bacterial infection.

Viral Sinusitis

  • Often follows a cold or respiratory infection
  • Symptoms gradually improve
  • Congestion and facial pressure can occur
  • Mucus may be clear, white, yellow, or green

Treatment focuses on symptom relief. Antibiotics do not treat viral infections.

Possible Bacterial Sinusitis

  • Symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
  • Symptoms that worsen after initially improving
  • Severe symptoms, such as significant facial pain or persistent high fever
  • A physician evaluates the full pattern before recommending treatment

Treatment may include antibiotics when indicated, symptom relief, and follow-up instructions.

Tired of guessing? Walk in for a Monarch physician’s evaluation and treatment plan.

PHYSICIAN-LED DIAGNOSIS

Stop Self-Treating. Get the Right Diagnosis.

Allergies, viral sinusitis, and bacterial sinusitis can cause similar symptoms. If over-the-counter treatment is not helping, a physician evaluation can help determine the cause and the next step.

A Monarch physician reviews your symptom timeline, examines your nose and sinuses, and checks for concerning findings. Routine sinus infections generally do not need imaging. If complications are suspected, we direct you to the appropriate emergency or specialist evaluation; ordinary sinus X-rays cannot reliably rule out those complications.

"The number one mistake I see with sinus infections is patients taking antibiotics they don’t need. By the time they come to me, they’ve already done a round of amoxicillin from a telehealth visit that didn’t work — because it was viral from the start. A proper exam changes everything." — Dr. Lisa Clay, MD, Owner & Medical Director

WHEN TO VISIT

When to See a Doctor for Sinus Symptoms

Mild congestion after a cold often improves on its own. Visit Monarch Medicine if you’re experiencing:

  • ✓ Sinus symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
  • ✓ Symptoms that improve and then get worse
  • ✓ Significant facial pain or pressure
  • ✓ Persistent fever with sinus symptoms
  • ✓ Tooth or jaw pain alongside sinus pressure
  • ✓ Repeated sinus infections
  • ✓ Symptoms that are not improving with home care

Seek emergency evaluation: New swelling around the eyes with sinus symptoms, vision changes, or a severe headache with fever can signal a serious complication. Go to the emergency department rather than waiting for a routine visit. Call 911 for confusion, difficulty staying awake, or other life-threatening symptoms.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Sinus Infection FAQ

How do I know if my sinus infection is bacterial or viral?

Symptoms that persist without improvement, worsen after initially improving, or become severe warrant evaluation. Mucus color alone cannot distinguish the cause. A Monarch physician reviews your history and examination to recommend treatment.

Do I need antibiotics for a sinus infection?

Most sinus infections do not need antibiotics. Your physician determines whether antibiotics or observation with symptom treatment is appropriate.

Can urgent care treat a sinus infection?

Yes. Monarch provides physician evaluation, symptom management, and prescriptions when needed. Suspected complications may require emergency care or specialist imaging rather than an ordinary office X-ray.

What can I do at home to relieve sinus pressure?

Warm compresses, fluids, and saline nasal spray may help. For a neti pot or squeeze-bottle rinse, use only distilled, sterile, or previously boiled and cooled water—not untreated tap water. Follow the device’s cleaning instructions. Ask your physician or pharmacist which over-the-counter medicines are appropriate for you.

How long does a sinus infection last?

Recovery varies. Seek evaluation if symptoms last more than 10 days without improvement or worsen after initially getting better. If treatment has started and you are worsening or not improving as expected, contact the clinic.

I keep getting sinus infections. What should I do?

A Monarch physician can review your history, treat the current episode, and discuss whether an ENT evaluation is appropriate. Repeated symptoms may involve allergies or other underlying factors.

Do you accept insurance for sinus infection visits?

Yes. We accept most major insurance plans including Anthem, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna. We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana. We also offer affordable self-pay pricing.
