WHEN TO COME IN
When to Visit Urgent Care vs. the Emergency Room
Where to seek care depends on your symptoms, age, and health history. Severe symptoms need emergency care. Do not delay emergency evaluation to get a flu test.
Visit Monarch Medicine for Non-Emergency Symptoms
- Cough, sore throat, congestion, or body aches you would like evaluated
- Ear pain or sinus pressure that persists or worsens
- Fever or cough that returns after improvement — seek prompt assessment
- Flu-like symptoms when you are pregnant, age 65 or older, have certain chronic conditions, or are caring for a young child — contact a clinician promptly
- Questions about whether flu, COVID-19, or strep testing would help guide care
Do not wait several days to ask about treatment if you are at higher risk. Antivirals work best early, but 48 hours is not an absolute cutoff. A physician considers your symptoms, risk factors, and illness severity when deciding whether treatment is appropriate.
Seek Emergency or Immediate Medical Care
- Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty or blue or gray lips or face
- Call 911 for persistent chest pain or pressure
- Call 911 for new confusion, a seizure, or difficulty waking someone
- Significant dehydration, such as no urination, inability to keep fluids down, or severe weakness, needs emergency evaluation
- A child whose ribs pull in with each breath needs emergency evaluation
- A child with fever above 104°F that is not controlled by fever-reducing medicine needs immediate medical care
- For a baby three months or younger with a rectal temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher, contact the baby’s clinician immediately for urgent evaluation, even if the baby otherwise seems well. If you cannot promptly reach the clinician, seek emergency care.
Monarch Medicine does not provide IV fluids or IV medications. Severe dehydration requires emergency care.
These are examples, not a complete list. See CDC flu warning signs, CDC antiviral guidance, and AAP guidance on infant fever.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Cold & Flu FAQ
Do I need an appointment for cold or flu symptoms?
No. Walk in during our open hours for non-emergency symptoms, seven days a week. You can also check in online through MyChart.
How quickly can I get a flu test?
We offer on-site rapid flu testing when clinically indicated. Results may be available during your visit; timing depends on the testing needed. A negative rapid test does not rule out flu. Read our flu testing guide to learn how results help guide care.
Can you prescribe Tamiflu?
Yes. A Monarch physician may prescribe oseltamivir (Tamiflu) for suspected or confirmed flu when appropriate. Antivirals work best within the first two days, but treatment may still be appropriate later for people at higher risk or with severe or worsening illness. A positive rapid test is not always required. Contact a clinician promptly to discuss your symptoms and risk factors.
Do you treat children with cold and flu symptoms?
Yes. Our pediatric urgent care evaluates non-emergency illnesses. A young infant with fever needs immediate medical assessment. Call 911 for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, a seizure, or a child who is difficult to wake.
Do I need antibiotics for a cold?
Antibiotics do not treat viruses such as those that cause colds or flu. A physician may prescribe an antibiotic if a bacterial infection is identified and antibiotic treatment is appropriate.
Do you accept insurance for cold and flu visits?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans including Anthem, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna. We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana. We also offer affordable self-pay pricing.
What happens during a flu visit?
A physician reviews your symptoms and health history, examines you, and decides whether testing or further evaluation is needed. Your care plan depends on that assessment. Read what to expect at a flu visit, including what to bring and questions to ask before going home.

"The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring when I brought my daughter in. They created a welcoming environment with coffee, water, and snacks in the waiting area, which was a thoughtful touch. I also really appreciated their clear in-office pricing. They bill insurance but also offer very reasonable cash-pay options, which provides peace of mind compared to the unpredictable costs of an ER visit. Most importantly, the experience felt personal rather than rushed. Highly recommend if you’re looking for compassionate, patient-centered care."
