Can Urgent Care Do Stitches? Yes — Here’s What to Know Before You Go to the ER

The short answer is yes — urgent care can do stitches. But not all urgent cares, and not all retail clinics. If you’re bleeding and trying to decide between the ER, MinuteClinic, and urgent care, this will help you make the right call in the next 5 minutes.

I’m Dr. Lisa Clay, board-certified family physician and founder of Monarch Medicine Urgent Care in Carmel. We perform laceration repair on adults and children every week — sutures, staples, and wound adhesive. Here’s what you need to know.

What Monarch Medicine Can Do for Your Cut

  • Sutures (stitches) — for deep cuts, lacerations over joints, and wounds that need precise closure
  • Staples — for scalp lacerations and linear wounds in areas where cosmetic result is less critical
  • Wound glue (tissue adhesive) — for clean, shallow cuts, especially in children where minimizing pain matters
  • Wound cleaning and irrigation — thorough debridement to prevent infection
  • Tetanus booster — administered same-visit if yours isn’t current
  • Wound care instructions and follow-up — sent via MyChart with specific return-for-removal timeline

All of this happens in a single walk-in visit. No appointment. No ER wait. No $2,000+ bill.

Who Can’t Do Stitches

Location Can They Do Stitches?
CVS MinuteClinicNo — refers to urgent care or ER
Walgreens Community ClinicNo — refers to MedCheck
Kroger Little ClinicNo — refers out (and many are now closed)
Hospital ERYes — but 2-4 hour wait and $2,000+ average cost
Monarch MedicineYes — walk-in, physician-performed, same-day

Does My Cut Need Stitches? A Quick Guide

Not every cut needs stitches. Here’s how to assess while you’re applying pressure:

Your cut likely needs stitches if:

  • It’s deeper than 1/4 inch
  • You can see fat, muscle, or bone
  • It won’t stop bleeding after 10-15 minutes of firm pressure
  • The edges gape open and won’t stay together
  • It’s on the face, hands, feet, or over a joint
  • It was caused by a dirty or rusty object
  • It’s longer than 1/2 inch with irregular edges

You can likely manage at home if:

  • It’s shallow (skin-deep only)
  • Bleeding stops with light pressure in under 10 minutes
  • Edges come together naturally
  • It’s small, clean, and in a low-movement area

When in doubt, come in. It’s better to have a physician evaluate a cut and tell you it doesn’t need stitches than to skip treatment and end up with an infection or a scar that could have been prevented.

Go to the ER instead if: The bleeding is uncontrollable, the wound involves an artery (bright red pulsing blood), there is a deep puncture wound to the chest or abdomen, or the injury involves significant trauma. Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

Stitches for Kids

Children get cuts. A lot. Playground falls, kitchen accidents, sibling collisions — it’s part of growing up. At Monarch Medicine, we use age-appropriate techniques to keep your child as comfortable as possible during laceration repair. For smaller or shallower cuts, wound glue is often the best option for kids — it’s painless and doesn’t require removal.

We see children of all ages, including infants. MinuteClinic has age restrictions (typically 18 months+) and can’t do stitches at any age. Don’t take your child to a retail clinic for a cut — they’ll send you to the ER.

What About Cost?

The average ER visit for laceration repair costs $2,000–$3,000+ depending on complexity, facility fees, and whether imaging is needed. At Monarch Medicine, laceration repair is covered by your insurance at your standard urgent care copay. Self-pay patients can view our published pricing before walking in.

We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana.
