SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS
Sprain vs. Fracture — How to Tell the Difference
Sprains and fractures can feel almost identical. The only way to know for sure is an X-ray and a physician evaluation. Dr. Clay examines the injury, orders imaging when indicated, and determines the right treatment plan.
Sprain (Ligament Injury)
- Pain and tenderness around the joint
- Swelling that develops over hours
- Bruising (may appear 24–48 hours later)
- Difficulty bearing weight but often still possible
- Joint feels unstable or “loose”
Treatment: RICE protocol, bracing, pain management. Severe sprains may need immobilization or orthopedic referral.
Fracture (Broken Bone)
- Immediate, severe pain at the injury site
- Rapid swelling
- Visible deformity or abnormal angle
- Inability to bear weight or use the limb
- Pain that worsens with any movement
- Grinding or crunching sensation
Treatment: X-ray confirmation, splinting or casting, pain management, orthopedic referral for complex fractures.
Can’t tell which one it is? Neither can you without an X-ray. Walk in for same-day imaging and physician evaluation.

PHYSICIAN-LED INJURY CARE
More Than Ice and Ibuprofen
A sprained ankle seems simple — until you find out it’s actually a fracture, or a “minor” knee twist turns out to be a ligament tear that needs orthopedic follow-up. At Monarch Medicine, Dr. Lisa Clay, MD performs a thorough musculoskeletal examination, orders X-rays when clinically indicated, and determines whether your injury can be managed here or needs specialist referral.
For injuries we treat on-site, Dr. Clay provides splinting, bracing, pain management, and a clear return-to-activity plan. For injuries requiring orthopedic care, she provides the initial stabilization, imaging, and a warm referral so you don’t start from scratch with the specialist.
"I see a lot of patients who ‘walked it off’ for a week before coming in. By then, the swelling has masked the real injury. Getting an X-ray and a proper evaluation early leads to better outcomes and faster recovery." — Dr. Lisa Clay, MD, Owner & Medical Director

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Sprain & Sports Injury FAQ
Can urgent care X-ray my ankle?
Yes. Monarch Medicine has on-site digital X-ray with same-day physician review. No referral or separate imaging appointment needed. Walk in and we’ll image it the same visit.
How do I know if my ankle is sprained or broken?
You often can’t tell without an X-ray. Both can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty bearing weight. If you can’t put weight on it, the pain is severe, or the joint looks deformed, come in for evaluation and imaging.
Do you treat knee injuries?
Yes. Dr. Clay evaluates knee sprains, strains, and suspected ligament injuries. She can X-ray to rule out fractures and determine whether the injury can be managed conservatively or needs orthopedic referral for MRI and further evaluation.
Can you put a splint or brace on my injury?
Yes. We provide on-site splinting, bracing, and immobilization for sprains and fractures. Dr. Clay selects the appropriate stabilization method based on the injury type and location.
Is urgent care cheaper than the ER for a sprained ankle?
Significantly. An ER visit for an ankle injury with X-ray can cost $1,500–$3,000+. Urgent care with X-ray is typically a fraction of that. Visit our self-pay pricing page for current rates.
My child was injured during a game. Can you see them?
Yes. We treat patients of all ages including children and adolescents. We also provide sports physicals to help prevent injuries before they happen.
Do you accept insurance for injury visits?
Yes. We accept most major insurance plans including Anthem, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna. We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana. We also offer affordable self-pay pricing.
PATIENT REVIEWS
What Our Patients Say
★★★★★
"The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and genuinely caring when I brought my daughter in. They created a welcoming environment with coffee, water, and snacks in the waiting area, which was a thoughtful touch. I also really appreciated their transparent pricing. They bill insurance but also offer very reasonable cash-pay options, which provides peace of mind compared to the unpredictable costs of an ER visit. Most importantly, the experience felt personal rather than rushed. Highly recommend if you’re looking for compassionate, patient-centered care."
