PHYSICIAN-LED WOUND CARE

Skip the ER. Get Stitches Here.

Most lacerations don’t need an emergency room — they need a physician with the right tools. At Monarch Medicine, Dr. Lisa Clay, MD evaluates every wound for depth, contamination, nerve or tendon involvement, and fracture risk before deciding on the best closure method.

Unlike retail clinics, we have full wound care capabilities: sutures (stitches), staples, wound glue, local anesthesia, on-site X-ray for foreign body detection, and tetanus vaccination when needed. And the cost is typically a fraction of what you’d pay in an ER.

"Patients are surprised when they learn we can do stitches here — they assume they have to go to the ER. For most lacerations, an urgent care visit with a physician gets you the same quality repair, faster, and at a much lower cost." — Dr. Lisa Clay, MD, Owner & Medical Director

WHEN TO COME IN

Urgent Care vs. ER for Lacerations

✓ Come to Monarch Medicine:

  • Cuts that are gaping or won’t stop bleeding with pressure
  • Lacerations longer than ½ inch or deep enough to see fat/tissue
  • Scalp wounds (often bleed heavily but rarely need the ER)
  • Animal or human bites
  • Wounds with embedded debris (glass, metal, splinters)
  • Cuts on the face that may need careful closure for cosmetic results
  • You need a tetanus booster
  • Infected wounds (redness, swelling, pus, warmth)

⚠ Go to the ER When:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding that won’t stop with 15 minutes of firm pressure
  • Loss of sensation or inability to move fingers/toes near the wound
  • Wound exposing bone, joint, or tendon
  • Amputation or near-amputation
  • Large or deep wounds on the neck, chest, or abdomen
  • Wound caused by a high-velocity mechanism (power tools, machinery)

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your Visit in 4 Simple Steps

1

Walk In Immediately

No appointment needed. For active bleeding, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth and come straight in. Call ahead if you want: (317) 804-4203.

2

Wound Evaluation

Dr. Clay examines the wound for depth, contamination, nerve/tendon involvement, and foreign bodies. X-ray is performed on-site if fracture or embedded debris is suspected.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Laceration & Wound Care FAQ

Can urgent care do stitches?

Yes. Monarch Medicine provides sutures (stitches), staples, and wound glue for laceration repair. Dr. Clay has full wound care capabilities on-site, including local anesthesia and sterile suture kits.

How do I know if my cut needs stitches?

General guidelines: if the cut is deeper than ¼ inch, longer than ½ inch, gaping open, won’t stop bleeding with 15 minutes of pressure, or is on the face or over a joint, it likely needs stitches. When in doubt, come in — Dr. Clay will evaluate and determine the best closure method.

How long do I have to get stitches after a cut?

Ideally within 6‒8 hours for most wounds (up to 12–24 hours for facial lacerations). The sooner a wound is cleaned and closed, the lower the infection risk and the better the cosmetic outcome. Don’t wait — walk in as soon as possible.

Is this cheaper than the ER for stitches?

Significantly. An ER visit for laceration repair can cost $1,000–$3,000+ depending on the facility. Urgent care laceration repair is typically a fraction of that cost. Visit our self-pay pricing page for current rates.

Do you treat animal bites?

Yes. We evaluate and treat animal and human bites, including wound cleaning, closure when appropriate, antibiotic prophylaxis, and tetanus vaccination. We also help with any required reporting documentation.

Can you remove stitches or staples that were placed elsewhere?

Yes. If you received stitches or staples at an ER or another facility, you can come to Monarch Medicine for removal. No appointment needed — just walk in.

Do you accept insurance for wound care?

Yes. We accept most major insurance plans including Anthem, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna. We are not in network with Medicaid or Humana. We also offer affordable self-pay pricing.
